SEOUL -- To gain its competitiveness in South Korea's hydrogen generator market, SK E&C, a construction arm of South Korea's SK Group, has signed an exclusive supply contract with Bloom Energy, an American fuel cell generator company.

Bloom Energy claims its solid oxide fuel cell generator called "Energy Server" is eco-friendly and more efficient than other clean-fuel generators despite different claims by rival companies. The deal underlines SK E&C's campaign to take the upper hand in South Korea's nascent fuel cell power market.

SK E&C said in a statement Monday it would exclusively supply Bloom Energy's fuel cell generators in South Korea. The company said it would cooperate with its U.S. partner to localize parts before building an Energy Server plant.

"SK E&C will continue to develop business opportunities in the global market with a long-term vision of becoming a distributed power generation system operator," CEO Ahn Jae-hyun was quoted as saying. In December last year, the two companies won an order to build an 8.3MW solid oxide fuel cell power facility in Seongnam, a satellite city of Seoul.
