SEOUL -- Northland Power, a Canadian company which develops, finances, builds, owns and operates power generation facilities, forged an alliance with KEPCO E&C, a power plant design and engineering company involved in a major offshore wind farm project off the southern resort island of Jeju.

Under a memorandum of understanding, the two companies will jointly participate in wind farm projects at home and abroad. Cooperation will be made in enhancing competitiveness and expertise in floating offshore wind farm facilities.

The two companies agreed to cooperate in the development and operation of offshore wind power projects through the exchange of business information and data, licensing and technical support, the development of cooperative projects and joint investment.

KEPCO E&C, a subsidiary of South Korea's state utility KEPCO, said its design experience and technology would create synergies with Northland Power's experience in investment, development, construction and operation of offshore wind power plants.

The Canadian company was involved in wind farm projects in Taiwan and the North Sea. KEPCO E&C is a contractor in a 500 billion won ($486 million) project to build a 100-megawatt offshore wind power cluster off the coastal town of Hanlim in Jeju. KEPCO controls 29 percent in a special purpose company and KEPCO E&C owns five percent.
