SEOUL --  K/DA, a virtual K-pop girl group comprised of four characters from the world's most popular video game League of Legends, garnered 100 million views on YouTube with its debut song "POP/STARS" becoming a global hit a month after the digital track was released.

The music video, uploaded onto YouTube on November 3, was watched 100,264,955 times as of 0400 GMT Tuesday. League of Legends, debuted by American game publisher Riot Games in 2009, is a multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) with about 80 million monthly active users.

The POP/STARS music video became a viral hit after K/DA debuted at the finals of the League of Legends tournament in South Korea's western city of Incheon, through a ceremonial concert which showcased a mixed real-time performance of real-life and virtual K/DA members using mixed reality technology.

American singers Madison Beer and Jaira Burns contributed the English lyrics, while Soyeon and Miyeon from K-pop girl band (G)I-DLE, a South Korean girl band, sang and rapped in Korean.

K/DA was credited with boosting the popularity of the game, which makes money off in-game purchases, with sales of $2.1 billion in 2017, according to research firm SuperData.
