SEOUL -- Harman International, a vehicle infotainment systems unit of Samsung Electronics, showcased an upgraded version of its connected infotainment system at CES 2019 in Las Vegas.

"Digital Cockpit" is an integrated infotainment system of digital displays, information and services that enable smarter interactions, improved safety and security, Harman said, adding that the system would help automakers seamlessly upscale offerings for all vehicle segments.

"With our CES 2019 technologies, HARMAN is helping automakers provide more connected experiences in a variety of segments that can be used today instead of years down the road," Harman president Dinesh Paliwal said.

Harman said that today's in-vehicle infotainment clusters could provide too much information for a driver, making the driving experience disjointed, and  cause discomfort and mistrust around connected car technology. To gain consumers' trust and help drivers make full use of the connected infotainment system, Harman recreated its Digital Cockpit for a range of entry-level and premium luxury cars.

An economic model of Digital Cockpit was designed to seamlessly integrate with a driver's smartphone to connect to a variety of assistant features such as Bixby, Samsung's AI assistant, or Alexa, Amazon's AI assistant, while utilizing its infotainment display to show critical and additional information such as ADAS (advanced driver assistance system) and turn-by-turn navigation.

For a premium model, Harman installed special features such as Cabin Monitoring System, which reads biometric signals from a driver to provide a tailored driving experience, and E-Mirror, an augmented reality surround view of a vehicle, as well cloud-connected profile storage settings for personalization.

Digital Cockpit is supported by Ignite Automotive Cloud, a cloud management platform for multiple in-vehicle solutions such as vehicle diagnostics tool and cloud-based driver profiles. The system can be updated wirelessly using an OTA (over-the-air) feature.

Harman is a top player in the global in-vehicle infotainment market, which is expected to reach $58 billion by 2022, according to Dublin-based market research company Research and Markets.
