SEOUL -- South Korea's Hyundai auto group jumped into the race to develop an independent specification for the wireless charging of electric vehicles as competition intensifies among global players to preoccupy standard technologies.

Hyundai said Friday it has unveiled new EV wireless charging technology at a meeting of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) this week in a northwestern satellite city of Seoul. The ISO is an international standard-setting body which promotes worldwide proprietary, industrial and commercial standards.

The ISO meeting was attended by some 20 experts from the United States, Germany, Japan and other countries to discuss international standards related to the safety and operation of wireless EV charging technology using magnetic fields.

Hyundai showcased low-frequency antenna-based technology that can be charged wirelessly in both short and medium range. It helps to determine the distance between charging facilities and electric cars as well as the degree of misalignment so that cars could be parked in a location optimized for wireless charging.

There has been a wireless charging specification using magnetic triangulation for vehicle alignment to assist manual and autonomous parking. Hyundai said its technology has a wide range of applications because it can be applied to medium and short distances (0 ~ 5 meters) and uses low-frequency antennas applied to smart key systems.

Hyundai hopes to get its technology patented and recognized as an international standard as competition intensifies to preoccupy standard technologies for wireless charging that enable drivers to park and charge vehicles easily without the need for plug-in cables or adaptors.
