SEOUL -- In an effort to secure a production network of core materials for electric vehicle batteries, SK Innovation, a subsidiary of South Korea's third-largest conglomerate SK Group, will build a lithium-ion battery separator (LiBS) plant in west Poland.

SK Innovation (SKI) said Wednesday that it would invest 430 billion won ($380 million) in the construction of its LiBS plant in Poland. "In order to secure fundamental competitiveness and strengthen our business expertise in the field of materials such as batteries, foldable phones and components that show high growth worldwide," SKI President Kim Jun said

At CES 2019 in Las Vegas in January, SKI showcased its flexible cover window (FCW), a core material for flexible displays which have emerged as a next-generation portable product. For transparent flexible displays, the company has developed FCW and other technologies. SKI is building a plant in its battery complex in Jeungpyeong.

SKI has invested heavily in its battery business. It is building a battery plant in Changzhou in China's southeastern Jiangsu province. SKI's battery plant in the United States will be built in Commerce in Jackson County, Georgia. German auto giant Volkswagen has selected SKI as the fourth strategic supplier of battery cells to cover its demand in North America.

SKI also earmarked a new investment of 945.2 billion won in building a second plant in Hungary. In early 2018, the company started building its first plant in the northern Hungarian city of Komarom. Production at the first plant is to begin in 2020. Construction of the second plant to be built in Komarom will begin in March for mass production in early 2022.
