SEOUL -- Daewoo Engineering and Construction (E&C) resumed suspended works on building a bridge between Zambia and Botswana after the South Korean builder received an overdue payment of $16.7 million. The bridge has been under construction over the Zambezi river, which also flows along the borders of Namibia and Zimbabwe.

Construction had come to a halt on March 18 because of a delayed payment, according to Daewoo E&C. The $259.3 million project was financed by the Japan International Cooperation Agency and the African development bank.

The 923-meter-long road and rail bridge has been under construction to replace the existing ferry and link the town of Kazungula in Zambia with Botswana. Construction began in October 2014 and was due to be completed by 2020.

This week, Zambian President Edgar Lungu and his Botswana counterpart Mokgweetsi Masisi agreed to allow Zimbabwe to join the bridge project and set up a one-stop border post at Kazungula.
