SEOUL -- A modified version of i30 N, Hyundai Motor's high-performance hatchback, will join three races in China this year.

Hyundai Motor said Thursday that "i30 N TCR" racecars will compete in Touring Car Race (TCR) Asia Series. Two race drivers each from three teams -- Liqui Moly Team Engstler, Eurasia Motorsport and Solite Indigo Racing -- will drive Hyundai's hatchback to race against other high-performance monster compact cars such as Volkswagen Golf GTI TCR and Audi RS3 LMS TCR.

According to TCR Asia Series' website, the races in China will take place on May 2-4, June 1-2 and July 5-7.

TCR Asia Series was launched in 2014 and became a part of TCR International Series, an international touring car championship. Teams who wish to race in the TCR series are required to buy a mass-produced vehicle model which meets technical requirements on size, minimum weight, minimum length and minimum width. Popular car brands in TCR are Hyundai, Volkswagen, Audi and Honda.

Hyundai established "Hyundai Motorsport GmbH", a motorsport division, in December 2012 to up its reputation as a global carmaker and promote the brand's image in the racing market. The team used the pumped-up version of i20, Hyundai's compact hatchback, to win the World Rally Championship races
