Doosan Heavy joins U.S. power plant project to install small modular reactor

SEOUL -- Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction, a key contractor in South Korea's nuclear power industry, has agreed to participate in the deployment of small modular reactors developed by NuScale Power LLC of the United States for cost-efficient and carbon-free nuclear power plants.

Doosan Heavy said Tuesday it has signed a memorandum of understanding with NuScale for strategic cooperation. The South Korean company would join the construction of NuScale's small modular reactor (SMR) and supply reactor modules, a key instrument for the power plant under development for Utah Associated Municipal Power Systems (UAMPS).

The SMR plant is expected to begin operation in 2026, and the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission is scheduled to complete the design certification review of NuScale’s technology in September 2020.

The two companies plan to expand cooperation in the American and overseas markets, Doosan heavy said, adding that for strengthened cooperation, it would seek to participate in NuScale with South Korean investors.

"We are impressed with the simplicity, safety and cost-effectiveness of NuScale's design, and we look forward to collaborating with the company as they bring America's first SMR to market," Doosan Heavy's nuclear power plant business head Na Ki-yong said in a joint statement.

"Furthermore, we see great potential for international applications of NuScale's carbon-free technology, and look forward to collaborating with NuScale as the company pursues additional opportunities," Na was quoted as saying.

Doosan Heavy, which builds power plants, turbines and generators, has been involved in the construction of nuclear power plants at home. NuScale, based in Portland, Oregon, designs and markets SMRs, based on a safer, smaller, and scalable version of pressurized water reactor technology.

With NuScale's scalable design, a power plant can house up to 12 individual power modules. It houses the reactor core, pressurizer and steam generator inside a single containment vessel.

"Through this relationship, we are not only broadening our supply chain base, but DHIC's potential investment will also be an endorsement of NuScale's strong position as a global SMR leader and our capability to deliver NuScale plants worldwide," said NuScale CEO John Hopkins.
