SEOUL -- In a deal that fell short of expectations, South Korean companies including Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP), the state-run operator of nuclear power plants, were allowed to provide a five-year maintenance service for the Barakah nuclear power plant in the United Arab Emirates.

KHNP said Monday that Nawah Energy, the operator of the Barakah plant, signed a long-term maintenance service agreement with a consortium involving KHNP and KEPCO Plant Service & Engineering (KPS). Nawah signed a separate maintenance service agreement with Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction, a key contractor in South Korea's nuclear power industry.

Under a $20 billion contract in 2009, a KEPCO-led consortium has been building four APR-1400 reactors with a combined capacity of 5,600 megawatts in the Middle Eastern country. The 2009 contract paved the way for South Korea's first exports of home-made reactors. The first reactor was completed in 2018.

The five-year maintenance contract, which can be extended, fell short of expectations by KHNP, which is in charge of the operation of the nuclear power plant.

KHNP will conduct testing, diagnostics, inspections, maintenance and replacement, Nawah said in a statement, adding it plans to put the first reactor into commercial operation between the end of 2019 and early 2020, pending regulatory approval.
