SEOUL -- SK Telecom, a top mobile carrier in South Korea, has upgraded its existing video call service to support super high definition video chats using 5G networks, responding the needs of young smartphone users who actively engage in video chats to socialize.

Many smartphones have video call apps as their default feature. However, the quality of video chats ranges from 640 x 480 resolution to high definition (HD) 720 x 1280 resolution, which is ideal for 3G and 4G networks. Apple also provides "FaceTime", a video chatting feature for iPhones and laptops in HD.

SK Telecom (SKT) said in a statement on Tuesday that it has released "Caller 2.0", an upgraded version of its video call service, Caller, to provide real-time Quad HD (QHD) video chat features for 5G smartphones. QHD's resolution is far higher than HD's. Caller was included in "T Phone", SKT's free call service app based on data networks and WiFi. Users can make free phone calls to other users anywhere around the world.

"SKT is continuously providing new experiences of 5G mobile communication to customers by realizing ultra-high-definition video calls for Caller 2.0," SKT's mobile network operation division head Choi Jae-hoon was quoted as saying.

SKT said that its video call app was favored by couples and young parents. About 10 million calls were made using the T Phone app during the last 30 days. 5G smartphone users can choose different resolutions ranging from low-definition to QHD for Caller 2.0 video chats depending on data plans. 3G and 4G smartphone users can enjoy the service in Full HD (1080 x 1920 resolution).
