SEOUL -- Augmented glasses developed by China's Nreal made its debut in South Korea in a trial service arranged by LGU+, a Seoul-based mobile carrier. Actual sales will be made in the first half of next year.

The trial service for Nreal Light, a device that can be worn like glasses to watch 3D AR contents, began on Thursday at LGU+ outlets and popup stores to provide customer experiences until the first quarter of next year. Nreal Light weighing 88 grams was priced at $499. It is lighter than head-mounted displays. If a smartphone and AR glasses are connected via USB, users can enjoy 3D AR contents.

"I'm pleased to open the era of full-fledged consumer AR glasses with LGU+," Nreal founder Chi Xu said, adding the two companies would cooperate in creating an ecosystem for next-generation AR developers.

"In the future, the pattern of media usage will change from smartphones to AR glasses," said LGU+'s future device division head Song Dae-won. The two companies have signed a strategic partnership to gain the upper hand in the market.

The two companies will introduce various 5G services, such as teleconferencing, in the future. If 5G smartphones and Bluetooth keyboards and mouse are connected, cloud PC services will enable PC operation with more than 100 inches of screen through AR glasses. They would also consider practical education and showroom services that utilize 3D AR contents.
