SEOUL -- Brief chaos erupted in South Korea's online chatting when Kakao Talk, the country's biggest smartphone messenger app, malfunctioned.

Kakao Talk, with some 50 million users, failed to send and receive messages at around 9:00 a.m. (0000 GMT), causing trouble at workplaces as many companies use it as real-time communication networks to share information and give orders.

"I am working at home and it seriously bothers me that I cannot communicate with my workmates," said 82745, a user from South Korean online IT community Clien. Another user Blue Rain said: "I am also working at home and I cannot contact anyone."

Kakao Talk malfunctioned when millions of users sent messages of greetings on Christmas and the New Year's Eve, but it is rare for the messenger app to experience such a malfunction during the morning of a weekday.
