SEOUL -- Naver, a top portal and online technology giant in South Korea, has introduced a new voice recognition technology using artificial intelligence that is more accurate than previous ones and smart. The new technology is being used in the phone call check-up of people who are in self-quarantine to see if they are infected with a novel coronavirus.

Naver introduced Neural End-to-end Speech Transcriber (NEST), an artificial intelligence (AI)-based voice recognition engine, that can respond to unexpected spoken speeches it hasn't learned yet. According to Naver, NEST has capabilities to recognize various long speeches spoken in human voices and transcribe what it heard into text.

Because of its transcribing ability, it is able to understand conversations that it had not learned before. Naver said NEST requires studying only about 10 percent of speech data required by conventional voice recognition software.

Never said NEST technology is currently being used by health authorities for the AI bot-based regular check-up of self-quarantined people. The system would call self-quarantined people several times a day to ask questions about their health conditions such as body temperature and chest pain.

Naver said its new voice recognition engine with the transcribing ability was also adopted by the web company's news content to create subtitles in real-time.
