SEOUL -- A cooperative intelligent transport system (C-ITS) was showcased in South Korea's southern resort island of Jeju using a self-driving car. The system provides real-time information such as traffic conditions, sudden stops and fallen objects so that individual vehicles can share data and prevent traffic accidents.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport said in a statement that it held a demonstration of C-ITS using an autonomous vehicle based on Hyundai Motor's electric car, Ioniq, on a five-kilometer route from Jeju Airport. The self-driving car used C-ITS to recognize signals through sensors and control speed even when visibility is not clear.

The car installed with five radars, five cameras and seven Lidars can run at a maximum speed of 80 kilometers (49.7 miles) per hour. Lidar is an environment detecting system that measures distances by illuminating the target with laser light.

"We have been able to respond to various unexpected situations by utilizing traffic signal information provided through C-ITS, and C-ITS traffic safety services are expected to be highly utilized in the process of expanding autonomous driving services across Jeju Island," RedFlux CEO Park Jung-hee was quoted as saying.

RideFlux, which develops autonomous technology, will upgrade self-driving functions and expand demonstration areas throughout Jeju Island by utilizing information provided through C-ITS. The company has tested autonomous vehicles on the roads of Jeju.
