SEOUL -- Two service robots produced by LG Electronics were deployed at a hotel in Seoul to deliver food from the kitchen to customers at an outdoor terrace. When customers finish meals, the robots carry trays back to the kitchen.

The robots provide services until the middle of this month during a summer event arranged by Mayfield Hotel. LG aims to offer an integrated hotel robot solution that provides outdoor delivery, food and beverage services and concierge services. Robots will be used for simple and repetitive tasks while hotel personnel will take care of more careful customer handling.

LG said it would expand the application of robots by verifying outdoor delivery robots in various spaces including hotels, university campuses, apartment complexes and amusement parks. "We will continue to develop robot service solutions that will give customers new experiences and values," LG's robotics business head Roh Jin-seo said in a statement.

LG has developed various service robots such as CLOi, an AI-based service robot which provides navigational services and controls connected appliances. LG's foodservice robot has been put into test operation at a restaurant in Seoul. Equipped with self-driving technology, it can bring food to customers and carry empty dishes back to the kitchen.

In February, LG partnered with Woowa Brothers, the operator of South Korea's top food delivery service app Baedal Minjok, to develop a total smart solution for other robots. On July 7, LG's self-driving service robot was deployed at a state-run hospital in Seoul to deliver blood samples, prescription drugs, diagnostic reagents and consumables.
