SEOUL -- Huvis, a fiber material producer in South Korea, is ready for mass-production of a non-toxic foam material called "ECOPET," which is recyclable and has excellent thermal insulation and heat-resisting properties, by opening a domestic plant following the establishment of a joint-venture plant in China.

ECOPET is a sheet-type PET foam material that can be used as food containers, such as cup noodles and packed meals. It is free of endocrine-disrupting chemicals and certified as non-toxic by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

"ECOPET is the first material in South Korea to be made by foaming PET. It is highly marketable as it can replace existing foam materials that cannot be recycled," Huvis CEO Shin You-dong said in a tape-cutting ceremony on August 24 in Chungju, some 94 kilometers (58 miles) south of Seoul. The Chungju plant has an annual production capacity of 3,000 tons.

The company's existing production line focuses on food containers and automotive interior materials, while the Chungju plant is responsible for industrial buffers such as display protection pads.
Existing foam materials used as display protection pads are difficult to recycle because they combine heterogeneous materials.

Huvis has established an ECOPET joint-venture plant in Chongqing, China, which has a rapidly growing instant hot pot market for home meal replacements (HMRs), also known as ready-to-cook meal kits, which only require the simple process of heating on a stove or microwave oven. The Chongqing plant is to start commercial production this year.
