SEOUL -- South Korea's navy took delivery of its first training ship mounted with an advanced education and training system that allows cadets to master simulated combat aboard various vessels including destroyers and frigates. The 4,500-ton ship, Hansando, can accommodate 120 sailors and 300 cadets.

The 42-meter-long training ship, built by Hyundai Heavy Industries in November 2018, is installed with lecture rooms, operating rooms, medical rooms and sickbeds, according to the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA), a state body controlled by the defense ministry. The vessel was designed for the training of cadets, but it also can act for a shipwreck rescue operation and the treatment of patients.

The vessel features a state-of-the-art education and training system as well as a stealth function to reduce various signals and ensure better survival. Hansando can sail more than 12,000 kilometers (7,456 miles) at a speed of 33km per hour. It is equipped with 76-mm and 40-mm guns. The vessel is also set to be fitted with chaff launchers, torpedo launchers and electronic warfare systems. There is also a helicopter deck and hangar.
