SEOUL -- POSCO E&C, a construction arm of South Korea's top steelmaker POSCO, joined hands with S-Oil, a petroleum and refinery company, and two other domestic companies to develop and commercialize high-performance concrete using steel and oil byproducts.

The partnership was based on a study that if slag components such as magnesium oxide (MgO) and calcium oxide (CaO) react with sulfur trioxide (SO3), the curing speed would be 10 percent faster. POSCO E&C said that the new method can increase chemical resistance and durability while reducing the construction period.

POSCO E&C said in a statement on November 3 that steel and refinery byproducts can be reborn as competitive construction materials. "We will open the way for shared growth by developing new technologies with the synergy of companies with technological prowess in each field," an unnamed POSCO E&C official was quoted as saying.

POSCO E&C agreed to develop a new cement with Beomjun E&C, which has sulfur cement concrete technology. S-Oil will supply sulfur and other refined byproducts for ten years. Taemyung, a producer of concrete products, will participate in the development of precast concrete that is pre-manufactured at a factory.
