SEOUL -- South Korea's largest telecom company KT has commercialized an artificial intelligence-based 5G microwave network recovery control tower system that can remotely detect network malfunctions. By using this system, technicians do not have to visit isolated regions such as islands and mountains every time a network malfunction takes place.

Fixing a faulty network in an old-fashioned way involves a process in which workers visit malfunctioning network nodes and looking for the cause of a problem. The process could take hours or even days when the network node is located in hard-to-reach places. The process requires a lot of time and maintenance costs.

KT said in a statement that the company commercialized "Dr.Lauren MW," an AI-based microwave communication network recovery control tower system, for the first time in the industry. Using an AI engine, the recovery system detects problems and suggests technicians the best counter plans. In October 2020, the recovery system was applied to islands and mountains in the southwestern coastline where it is vulnerable to a communication blackout.

Dr.Lauren was developed and commercialized in 2018. The new Dr.Lauren MW is a recovery system specialized in communication networks such as 4G and 5G mobile networks that use a beam of radio waves in the microwave frequency range.

"Thanks to the upgrade AI engine, problems were detected in about a minute, which is about 10 times faster than our previous network malfunction-detecting system," KT said, adding that it only took about five minutes for the system to analyze the problem. KT said telecom operators can react to network problems anytime, even in after-work hours or in bad weather when personnel cannot be deployed quickly.
