SEOUL -- As part of a campaign to stop the spread of COVID-19, autonomous disinfection robots installed with ultraviolet-C "germicidal" lamps will be deployed along the route of travelers from entry gates to quarantine stations at Incheon International Airport, South Korea's main gateway, along with quarantine guide robots.

Ultraviolet-C (UV-C) radiation is a known disinfectant for air, water and surfaces that can help mitigate the risk of acquiring an infection. The wavelength of UV-C ranges from 200 nm to 280 nm which is harmless to the human body and has a high sterilization effect.

The operator of Incheon International Airport said it would deploy two disinfection robots and six quarantine guiding robots to its second terminal. The self-driving quarantine guide robot delivers instructions to travelers who fail to comply with quarantine guidelines.

The corporation would consider introducing disinfection robots at the first terminal. "We hope the introduction of robots will further strengthen Incheon International Airport's smart quarantine infrastructure," said Incheon International Airport Corporation President Kim Kyung-wook. "We will proactively expand quarantine infrastructure in the future and respond to the recovery of aviation demand in the future."
