SEOUL -- South Korea's top telecom service operator KT will establish an integrated fire monitoring system at logistics warehouses operated by ecommerce giant Coupang. The smart fire monitoring system called "FPS24" is capable of monitoring fire equipment in real-time and detecting fires 24 hours a day.

KT said in a statement on December 24 that the telecom company signed a cooperation agreement with Coupang to provide the smart fire monitoring system for the ecommerce giant's logistics centers. The installation schedule and financial details were not disclosed. "We will provide our digital solution to four to five logistics centers," KT's public relations official Son Boo-sik told Aju Business Daily on December 24. He said the solution was already demonstrated at two centers. The two companies will also collaborate to develop various smart fire detection systems including artificial intelligence (AI)-based fire safety platforms.

Coupang, known as the South Korean counterpart of Amazon, currently has some 170 logistics centers across the country. Consumers can receive various household items including detergents and foods within 24 hours of their purchase through Coupang's "Rocket" delivery system. In June 2021, Coupang's logistics center in Icheon some 52 kilometers (32) miles south of Seoul was destroyed by a massive fire that took six days to be extinguished. A firefighter was killed in action.
