South Korea's service areas have a unique food culture where travelers make a stop to grab snacks or meals. People used to wait in the queue to purchase hotdogs, fried potatoes, fishcakes and drinks. However, a coronavirus pandemic prompted many to shun crowded service areas because they feel uncomfortable standing in lines.
The Ministry of Land Infrastructure and Transport said in a statement on December 31 that all 199 expressway service areas will provide a smartphone app-based non-face-to-face order service in 2022. Currently, customers can use wireless order services in 166 areas. The ministry will upgrade existing maps to provide information about the availability of electric and hydrogen fuel cell vehicle chargers at service areas.
