SEOUL -- Using an eco-friendly polyester fiber produced by a textile company, South Korea's major online apparel retail giant Musinsa will release T-shirts in the first half of 2022 through its affordable everyday-wear apparel brand. The eco-friendly polyester fiber called "Regen" can be made with recycled polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles.

Recycled PET bottles have been used to manufacture clothes, bags and shoes. Bottle water companies in South Korea are releasing label-free PET bottles for easy recycling so that consumers do not have to remove labels made of a thin sheet of plastic.

Musinsa offers digital showrooms for popular apparel companies as well as two independent brands including "Musinsa Standard" and "Woosinsa," a women's apparel brand. Musinsa Standard gained popularity among young consumers by allowing them to upload pictures wearing its products and flaunt their styles via smartphones.

Hyosung TNC will supply Regen to Musinsa Standard targeting millennials and Gen Zs. The two companies signed an agreement on January 21 to use recycled fabrics for Musinsa's "Green Line" products as part of environmental, social, and corporate governance (ESG) management. ESG is a trendy corporate operation method that focuses on the use of green energy and environmentally-friendly management.

South Korean apparel makers have focused on producing clothing brands using recycled materials. In December 2021, Hyosung TNC showcased more than 10 trendy traditional Korean costumes called "Hanbok" through collaboration with Leesle, a modern Hanbok brand.

BTS has garnered worldwide attention at the 76th United Nations General Assembly for wearing "RE;CODE," a suit made with recycled fabric produced by the fashion wing of South Korea's fabric maker Kolon Group. In October 2021, Hyundai Motor also released 12 types of fashion items using waste materials including discarded car airbags.
