SEOUL -- KT, a top telecom company in South Korea, will expand the use of its 5G-based AI sports broadcasting solution to all sports games through collaboration with Pixelscope, a domestic AI broadcasting solution developer. The solution is useful in transmitting scenes of sports events that have not received much attention due to the lack of manpower and equipment.

KT said that 5G-based AI sports broadcasting has space and cost efficiency because it can minimize the use of essential equipment such as relay cars and operating personnel. AI sports broadcasting is effective in relaying unpopular or local sports events because there is no need to spend money on expensive broadcast vans or hire additional photographers.

KT said in a statement that the company will provide its AI broadcasting solution in every sport including golf, soccer, basketball and baseball. "We have been providing the solution to the Korea Table Tennis League since the end of January," KT's spokesperson Seo Young-jin told Aju Business Daily on February 16. Professional table tennis events relayed with KT's solution are now available on YouTube and a cable TV channel.

Because AI technology can automatically control cameras, AI sports broadcasting can transmit optimal relay scenes in real-time. Through deep learning technology, the system can also show scores and replay scenes in the case that the audience questions a referee's decision. The system observes the movements of athletes and provides various data such as the speed of the ball.
