SEOUL -- The Road Traffic Authority will provide traffic light information for users of a smartphone navigation app operated by Kakao so that drivers and pedestrians can travel more safely. The smart road information service is capable of providing on-road information without the need for a cooperative-intelligent transport system, which is the basic infrastructure for smart city and autonomous vehicle systems.

A cooperative-intelligent transport system (C-ITS) is a smart road system that incorporates smart vehicle and connected car technologies such as vehicle-to-everything (V2X) and internet of things (IoT) communications. However, such a system works best if it is installed during the development stage of a smart city. Otherwise, sensors and communication relay points must be set up.

The Road Traffic Authority said in a statement on March 16 that the real-time traffic light information service will be provided for Kakao's navigation app uses living in the southern industrial city of Daegu later this month. The traffic light information service co-operated by the National Police Agency will provide information about traffic lights at intersections. "This service will be useful for drivers who are making a right turn," the road authority said.

According to the Road Traffic Authority, the traffic light information service will be expanded to other areas in the future. The connected car navigation app service was demonstrated in Daegu in November 2021.
