HJ Shipbuilding & Construction (HJSC) said that its 7,700 TEU LNG dual-fuel container ship has received approval in principal from Lloyd's Register (LR). HJSC was responsible for designing the container ship, and LR was in charge of reviewing and approving design drawings.
The ship is 272 meters long and can sail at a speed of 22 knots, HJSC said, adding it features high fuel efficiency and a membrane tank to secure the storage capacity of 6,000 cubic meters and maximize container load with optimal arrangement. Membrane tanks are non-self-supported cargo tanks surrounded by a complete double hull ship structure.
The International Maritime Organization (IMO), a U.N. maritime safety agency, has adopted mandatory energy-efficiency measures to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases from ships. South Korean shipbuilders work hard to secure a competitive edge in eco-friendly vessels.
A dual-fuel propulsion system capable of using LNG or liquid fuels discharges little sulfur oxide (SOx) emissions. The dual-fuel option offers economic benefits as well as practical and environmental advantages. With LR's approval, HJSC said it has secured eco-friendly shipbuilding technology and can respond to various demands of shipowners.
"As carbon neutrality has emerged as a hot topic in the shipping and shipbuilding industries, the demand for eco-friendly alternative fuel propulsion ships such as methanol, ammonia, and hydrogen will further expand," an unnamed HJSC official said in a statement on April 14
Hanjin Heavy Industries & Construction changed its corporate name to HJSC in 2021, after a consortium led by Dongbu acquired a controlling stake in the shipbuilder from creditors.
