SEOUL -- Jaguar Land Rover's new "Range Rover" sports utility vehicle will be installed with smart headlights from ZKW Group, an Austrian automotive lighting system producer affiliated with South Korea's LG Electronics. ZKW's light-emitting diode (LED) headlights produce glare-free high beams that automatically block out oncoming or other road users.

The smart digital lighting automatically produces glare-free high beams, detects the width of the road, and illuminates only the relevant part or projects. ZKW's smart lighting also enables animated images to be projected onto the road. ZKW adopted innovative LED modules with 1.2 million pixels whose light is directed via microscopically tiny, electronically controlled mirrors.

"Intelligent lighting systems increase comfort, enhance road safety and mark the way towards autonomous driving," ZKW CEO Oliver Schubert said in a statement on April 20. Jaguar Land Rover models are installed with ZKW's fog lights and the Land Rover Discovery Sport with rear lights.

In a deal worth $1.2 billion in 2018, LG Electronics acquired ZKW, which has developed new micromirror modules, a complicated device that can specifically and precisely shoot laser beams. A micromirror module enables smart light functions. The mirror can be pivoted around to shoot laser beams to project symbols and warnings on the road.
