SEOUL -- South Korea's southern city of Daegu will build a disaster monitoring infrastructure using digital twin technology to test virtual disaster situations and make preparations for real-life disasters. Through collaboration with government agencies and research institutes, a local disaster monitoring system will be developed.
Digital twins are virtual clones of machines, equipment and infrastructures. They are used to identify problems and the results of real-life situations simulated in a virtual space before making an actual product or setting up a counter-disaster plan. Products can be demonstrated under many different conditions without causing an irreversible effect in real life. A new model can be created if the virtual clone is destroyed in virtual reality.

Daegu said in a statement that the city signed an agreement with Kyungpook National University, Daegu Regional Office of Meteorology, Daegu Gyeongbuk Institute, and the National Information Society Agency to create a digital twin-based city safety infrastructure. A disaster monitoring center that incorporates the nationwide public safety-LTE network will be established. A data center will be also created to share disaster-related information.

"We will try hard to create Daegu into a digital twin-based smart disaster monitoring city by building a smart safety infrastructure through this agreement," Daegu official Kim Jong-han said in a statement on April 25.
The Ministry of Environment is currently creating digital twin solutions for aerial and underwater drones so they can efficiently inspect dangerous areas where human workers cannot reach. Using digital twin technology, drones can thoroughly inspect dams without any blind spots. South Korea's central city of Daejeon also partnered with a state research institute to create the digital twin of a city so that city officials can test new road infrastructure and apply various policies including health and social welfare.
