SEOUL -- A state research institute in South Korea has upgraded its open-source research and development platform to allow anyone to make changes to computer programming codes or participate in various R&D projects.

Open-source applications and platforms are based on the participation of people and their collective intelligence. The free-to-use programming applications have become a new paradigm in the fields of R&D. Various R&D projects can be branched out from a single open-source project simultaneously for later integration.

Many public organizations and private companies have adopted open source applications to accelerate the development of applications, services, and technologies. The work efficiency is very high as open source-based platforms involve as many developers as possible to create an environment where innovative ideas can freely be created.

The Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) said that its open-source platform was upgraded to cover compliance automation and open collaborative development environments. ETRI's platform was launched in 2019. The institute promoted the innovative transition of South Korea's R&D environment to an open community-based ecosystem. Collaborative workspaces were set up while young developers were incubated.

"We will continue to share ETRI's open source-related knowledge and experience with other state institutes, companies, academics, and communities. The upgraded platform will become a cornerstone for the accelerated development of South Korea's R&D culture and the country's capabilities," ETRI's open-source center head Lee Seung-yoon said in a statement on May 10.
