SEOUL -- A homegrown technology for inspecting the condition of rail supporting facilities for electric trains has been developed to replace imports. It was designated as a new transportation technology that can receive various benefits such as development funds to strengthen technology competitiveness.

Applied with the new technology, a high-speed and high-resolution camera can photograph tram track support facilities and provide related information in real time through deep learning-based image analysis, according to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.

Tram track supporting facilities that connect tram lines installed along the tracks to supply electricity must be managed at all times for smooth operation. Previously, maintenance personnel had to go out and check visually at night when trains were not operating, leading to a high error rate.

The new automatic inspection technology will increase the accuracy and efficiency of inspection and reduce the risk of railway accidents, the ministry said in a statement on June 15.
