SEOUL -- Hanwha Impact, a unit of South Korea's Hanwha Group, will produce hydrogen through ammonia cracking in collaboration with Wonik Materials, a domestic specialty gas manufacturer with technologies for designing an ammonia cracking system.
Ammonia is produced through a chemical reaction between hydrogen and nitrogen at high pressure and temperatures. Ammonia cracking is the process of decomposing ammonia into hydrogen and nitrogen over a catalyst to increase the range of possibilities for utilizing ammonia as an energy vector.
Hanwha Impact will develop a process for ammonia degradation as well as the establishment of facilities to commercialize clean hydrogen production. Wonik Materials will be in charge of the decomposition, catalyst, development and supply of commercial ammonia.
"We will accelerate the transition to the carbon neutral society through the world's top hydrogen gas turbine technology and mass production of hydrogen created through reformation ammonia," Hanwha Impact CEO Kim Hee-chul said in a statement on July 27.

In March 2022, Hanwha Corp. partnered with Wonsik Materials and Korea National Oil Corporation (KNOC) to establish a hydrogen-ammonia value chain from the establishment of storage infrastructure to the production and supply of hydrogen through ammonia cracking.

In November 2021, a government task force was launched to speed up the commercialization of technologies using hydrogen and ammonia for power generation. Gas turbines have become one of the most widely-used power generating technologies because they reduce the emission of fine dust and other air pollutants.
