SEOUL -- Using technology provided by a state-run research body, KCC, a top provider of construction materials and paints, will develop a coating material capable of removing scratches from car surfaces in about 30 minutes just by exposing them to sunlight. Commercialization will help reduce the use of organic solvents for repainting vehicles.

"By combining KCC's accumulated paint techniques and component technology from the Korea Research Institute of Chemical Technology, we will lead the global mobility paint market," KCC's paint business head Kim Bum-sung said after signing an agreement to develop and commercialize coating material technology for mobility on September 6.

In 2020, a solvent-free coating material developed by KCC through collaboration with South Korea's Hyundai shipbuilding group was applied to a large ore carrier to reduce sulfur oxide (SOx) emissions. Harmful air pollutants emitted from shipyards come mostly from volatile organic compounds used in solvent-based paints. Samsung Heavy Industries' research team has teamed up with Jotun, a Norwegian chemical company dealing in decorative paints and performance coatings, to develop a solvent-free coating technology.
