Samsung releases ultra-wideband-based door lock service on digital wallet service platform

SEOUL -- Using Ultra-wideband technology that uses radio waves to measure the distance of an object, South Korea's tech giant has released a "Digital Home Key" service feature that allows users to open selected digital door locks using the smart wallet feature of Samsung smartphones without having to input passcodes or physically touching the lock. Family members are notified when someone has entered and left the home. 

Ultra-wideband (UWB) accurately measures the distance by transmitting radio waves such as Bluetooth and WiFi at a high frequency. Users can find their cars in a crowded parking lot or their lost belongings inside a building using UWB technology.
 
Samsung said in a statement on November 29 that the company collaborated with Zigbang, a domestic real estate market platform operator company, to add the UWB digital home key feature to Samsung Pay, the company's smartphone digital payment service. Through the new feature, users can easily lock and unlock their doors without touching their doorknobs. If they lose their smartphones, they can temporarily deactivate the digital door lock.
