SEOUL -- South Korean science fiction film "Jung_E," by Yeon Sang-ho, became the most watched content on Netflix's non-English chart. The film depicts a story of researchers striving to develop an artificial intelligence-based combat robot by cloning a brain of a female warrior named "Yun Jung-yi" to fight against enemies in the 22nd century.

The global streaming service giant said that the South Korean film recorded some 19.3 million hours of viewing only three days after its release on January 20. Jung-E was the most viewed content on Netflix's weekly non-English film chart from January 16 to January 22. The second most watched content was "Mission Majnu," an Indian spy thriller film with 8.94 million hours of viewing.

The South Korean film entered the top 10 in 80 countries including Taiwan, Germany, Spain, and Singapore. In the movie, AI technology company Kronoid aims to create a combat robot using the brain of Yun Jung-yi who ends up in a coma while carrying out a combat mission when humans were forced to live in shelters in space because of climate change on Earth.

The film was created by Yeon Sang-ho, the director of a popular zombie blockbuster film series "Train to Busan" and its sequel "Penninsula." Jung-E stars Kang Soo-yeon, a veteran actress who gained popularity through "The Surrogate Woman," a 1986 film portraying the love affair between a rich aristocrat and a servant during the Joseon dynasty that ruled the Korean peninsula from 1392 to 1897. The actress died of cardiac arrest in May 2022.
