Eight overseas Korean restaurants designated as outstanding eateries for popularizing Korean food

SEOUL -- The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs designated outstanding Korean restaurants in foreign countries based on 21 requirements including food quality, hygiene, and contribution to the popularization of Korean dishes. The ministry provides recognition awards for selected restaurants as well as financial support. On January 26, the ministry designated eight restaurants with the state-run Korean Food Promotion Institute.
 
Jeongsik

Jeongsik is a New York-based Korean fine-dining restaurant that opened in 2011. Using different ingredients including rice, laver, and abalone, the restaurant offers fancy Korean menus. It is the first Korean restaurant to receive two Michelin stars.
 
Atomix

Atomix in Manhattan is an upscale Korean restaurant that utilizes red pepper powder and soy sauce. In 2022, it was selected as the 33rd on the list of the world's top 50 restaurants, compiled by a renowned food evaluation brand called "The World's Best 50 Restaurants."
 
Yoon Haeundae Galbi

Yoon Haeundae Galbi, some 0.2 miles north of the Empire State Building, specializes in a Korean-style barbecued pork rib menu. For the ingredients, it often uses salt, soy sauce, plum syrup, and soybean paste.
 
 
Sun Grill Mare

Located in Paris, the restaurant provides Samgyeopsal, Korean-style barbecued pork belly. The pork belly menu was picked as the most favored Korean dish by foreigners in a 2017 survey. It is also popular for Pajeon, a traditional South Korean pancake.
 
Jongno Samgyetang

Jongno Samgyetang in Paris has gained popularity for Samgyetang (Ginseng Chicken Soup) known as one of Korea's special summer dishes. Samgyetang, which uses a young chicken filled with garlic, rice, scallion and spices, ginseng and jujube, has been consumed as a healthy food. The restaurant maintained the perfect score (5.0) on Tripadvisor, a global travel platform.

The restaurant in Paris has attracted French people through Korean blood sausage called "Sundae" and "Gopchang," intestines of cows or pigs. The restaurant was named after Yi Do, King Sejong who invented the Korean alphabet called "Hangul" during the Joseon dynasty that ruled the Korean peninsula from 1392 to 1897.
 
Yunke

Pine nut and jujube are often used to cook various types of Korean food at Yunke located in Tokyo. It has received two Michelin stars for six consecutive years.
 
Hasuo

The restaurant in Tokyo has captivated young Japanese by recreating Korean royal dishes from the Joseon Dynasty into the modern version. It is mostly favored by young Japanese consumers.
