SEOUL -- For the first time in the history of South Korea's winter games, a prodigy snowboarder named Choi Ga-on has grabbed a gold medal in a superpipe competition event at the Winter X Games, an annual extreme winter sports event, held in Aspen, Colorado. The 14-year-old also broke the record for the youngest medal winner of the event.
The term superpipe refers to a competition event held in a large halfpipe structure used in extreme sports such as snowboarding and freestyle skiing. Snowboarders enter the upper end of the pipe at high speed to maintain the velocity so that they can slingshot into the air at the other side of the wall. While players are airborne, they can perform tricks such as spins, flips, and board-grabbing tricks before landing back in the pipe.
The athlete's performance is measured by a panel based on the technical difficulty of the tricks he or she performed on the halfpipe. Also, the height and styles of jumps is judged. The top stages of the international superpipe competition are the Winter Olympics and Winter X Games. South Korea, with very weak incubation resources for winter games players, did not have the opportunity to grab a gold medal in a major international superpipe event before Choi.
All That Sports, Choi Ga-on's management agency, said that Choi competed against seven other contestants to grab her very first gold medal in X Games Women's Superpipe event. The promising snowboarder born in November 2008 is 14 years and three months old and broke the record for the youngest X Games champion. The former record holder was Chloe Kim who won the superpipe event in January 2015 at the age of 14 years and nine months.
"I am so glad to win in an adults' competition event. I am really happy to meet the results of my efforts through X Games, the world's best competition event," Choi said in a statement on January 30.
