KT said in a statement on March 13 that the metaverse platform called "GenieVerse" was rolled out. Anyone can create their own avatars using some 1,000 items in GenieVerse, which incorporates artificial intelligence (AI)-based digital twin technology. The AI technique recreates users' actual houses based on diagrams showing the housing structure from above. GenieVerse is currently available on Google Play and the Apple Store.
Unlike many other metaverse platforms where most users engage in activities with strangers, GenieVerse users can socialize with their real friends as the platform is connected to contacts on their mobile phones. "We will try to provide many different services by combining KT's AI technology and media content," said Kim Yi-han, the head of KT Institute of Convergence Technology. The company said GenieVerse would offer AI-based dance content in the future.
Various South Korean companies have provided metaverse platforms targeting young people familiar with social and cultural activities in the virtual world. The operator of South Korea's top convenience store chain CU runs an online convenience store on Zepeto with more than 15 million monthly active users. Ifland, a metaverse platform made by mobile carrier SK Telecom, was adopted to hold a virtual music festival in June 2022. Volumetric capture technology which uses many cameras to capture an entire scene in 360 degrees was used so that fans could enjoy surreal content such as performances showing artists.
