LAS VEGAS -- In a strategic move to take the lead in the next-generation software-defined vehicle platform industry, global tech giant Samsung Electronics has forged a partnership with 42dot, a South Korean autonomous vehicle solution company.

Diverging from traditional vehicle platforms, where the purpose or type of cars is primarily defined by their hardware, SDV platforms introduce a revolutionary concept. These platforms enable the customization of a vehicle and its functionality based on the software it houses.

For instance, a connected car equipped with autonomous taxi software can seamlessly turn into a transport service vehicle. Similarly, if the car incorporates sports driving software, it has the potential to transform into a high-performance racecar. This flexibility and adaptability showcase the transformative capabilities of SDV platforms, allowing vehicles to evolve based on the software applications they integrate.

42dot mainly focuses on the development of autonomous driving technologies and SDV platforms. The company has demonstrated autonomous taxi and autonomous shuttle services in the western part of Seoul and other cities in South Korea. The company's autonomous bus currently roams around a 4.8-kilometer (2.9 miles) return route around Cheonggyecheon Stream that flows directly through the central Seoul area bustling with people and cars.

Samsung Electronics and 42dot forged a partnership at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), the world's largest annual electronics exhibition held in Las Vegas, on January 10 (local time) to cooperate in the development of SDV platform technologies and jointly roll out marketing promotions. The two companies seek to complete an SDV platform by 2025. Samsung will provide 42dot with a development platform for Exynos, Samsung-developed system-on-chip (SoC) semiconductor chips.

An SoC has the features of a processor and other modular components installed into a single chip. SoCs are widely used in mobile devices or other devices because they are not as bulky as fully modular systems. Samsung will also provide Exynos SoC automotive processors specializing in connected vehicles.
